Festas are a hallmark of Italian and Sardinian Culture. These are invariably family occasions. This picture was taken at one of Collinas' festas. One musician is playing a traditional instrument - Launeddas - "bagless" bagpipes. The instrument consists of three pipes - two chanters and a drone. This music generally accompanies "Ballo Sardo" - communal dancing in circles. The instrument is played using circular breathing and the technique often takes several years to perfect. Villages and towns are often noted for artisan specialities. For example, Mogoro, about 15 minutes drive from Collinas is famed for its locally produced tapestries. Sardara, just 5 km away is famed for its filigree lace work as well as its thermal springs for health and recuperation. |
