Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea - Sicily being the largest. The area of Sardinia is 9,300 sq. miles. The island lies between Italy, Spain, and Tunisia and is just south of Corsica. Politically, it is one of the autonomous regions in Italy.

The picture to the left is a scene from the Sartiglia held in Oristano at Mardi Gras. This celebration involves acrobats on horses and a competition to test riding skills with horsemen taking turns, at full gallop, to spear a suspended star before the steps of the cathedral. The parades, showmanship and medieval costumes are but one of the spectacular events to be witnessed throughout the year across Sardinia.

The history of the island is rich with many invasions dating from Phoenician and Roman times. The island has the remains of a Bronze Age civilisation of which little is known. The remains of this Nuragic civilisation can be seen across the island with some 8,000 sites. Nuraghes (conical towers) reaching over 60 feet in height were being built in Sardinia at this time. Whilst Italian is spoken throughout the island, you may well hear the indigenous language, Sardo. The Sards are very welcoming, courteous and hospitable. They are also very proud of their culture and traditions. We hope you will find the following links useful and help make your stay more memorable.
